want North Florida women to know the importance of well-woman care

An annual well-woman exam is the most important step women of all ages can take to protect their health

Each stage of a woman's life requires health management, disease detection and prevention. The best preventive care measure is the annual well-woman exam. The early detection of reproductive health problems is vital to maintaining good health.

The following statistic is alarming – the leading causes of death in women are lung, breast and colorectal cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most if not all of these deaths would not have occurred had the women sought preventive screening for early detection.

Well-woman screenings are vital in detecting reproductive cancer at an early and treatable stage. Continue reading to learn more about well-woman care, and look below for information about upcoming health insurance changes affecting women's health.

All About Women physicians offer excellent women's health care with sensitivity and compassion.

What is well-woman care?

Well-woman care includes a general health history, a sexual health history, a review of medications, contraceptive counseling, menopause counseling, a physical exam and, if needed, laboratory or other testing.

What questions will I be asked during the well-woman visit?

Your physician will ask you questions including, but not limited to:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Sexual practices
  • Menstrual cycles

What happens during the well-woman physical exam?

An OB/GYN doctor performs your exam with their nurse or medical assistant in the room. Your doctor will conduct the following at the well-woman exam:

  • Pelvic exam – to check for labia, vaginal, cervical, uterine, and ovarian abnormalities

  • Pap test – to screen for cervical cancer and possibly the human papilloma virus (HPV)
  • Evaluation of the skin, heart, lungs, and thyroid

  • Breast exam – to check for changes in skin texture, shape, nipple discharge and lumps

What other tests will be performed during the well-woman visit?

Depending on age, a mammogram or bone density scan may be ordered. Blood and other laboratory tests may be ordered to check hormone levels, the thyroid, and more.

Due to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, women's preventive care services like mammograms and prenatal care will be covered with no out-of-pocket expense to you.
